Eutrofização

Eutrophication is runaway growth caused by a sudden rise in nutrient levels. At best it is harmful; at worst devastating.

The influx of food (such as fertilizer or dead matter) causes uncontrolled growth of bacteria, algae, and other organisms - a bloom. The bloom depletes all oxygen in the water while shedding toxins and waste.

Chains of eutrophication can spread down ocean currents, as mass death upstream leads to eutrophication downstream.

Eutrophication is a symptom of the Ocean Collapse Complex that destroyed Earth's marine ecosystems in the 21st and 22nd centuries. It is implicated in earlier mass extinctions such as the Permian-Triassic Great Dying.
