Sponges

Perhaps the simplest animal. Draws in water through pores, then expels it, filtering nutrients. Usually hosts bacterial symbiotes.

Mixotroph — can obtain its energy from nutrients in the water, or may photosynthesize (or carry out other chemical reactions) with its bacterial symbiotes.

Earth analog: sponges. Sponges have been discovered on many lifebearing worlds.
